The town of Mooresville, Ala., has done itself no favors by demanding a $500 fee from professional photographers who dare take pictures of its historic buildings.After a photographer was told to stop taking photos in a public place, he wrote a letter to the local paper, unleashing a flood of bad press.The Huntsville Times reported last week: "Huntsville photographer Don Broome said Wednesday he was standing in a public street in Mooresville taking pictures of the town's historic buildings when he was served a notice that advised him to 'cease photography and leave immediately.'"TV stations and the Associated Press picked up the story, too. Digital cameras now outsell their 35mm predecessors in the general market and it is only the diehard celluloid junkies that maintain allegiance to film. The commercial photography industry now uses virtually exclusive digital technology to produce images due to their immediate shot review and post production efficiency. The feature film industry still maintains loyalty to Super 35mm film however the latest advances in HD technology has threatened even this most sacrosanct of institutions.

To: POP Editor Subject: Restrictions on Photographers Is it just me, or does it seem that more and more travel destinations are becoming "photographer unfriendly"? Many places ban tripods and monopods, but some (the Grand Canyon Rim Overlook) bans photography completely. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Press Office was good enough to explain to me their policy: "Thank you for your inquiry. There are three reasons we prohibit the use of tripods and monopods: 1) Visitor safety. I agree monopods are easier to control than tripods, but we can't make exceptions for monopods for the following two reasons. 2) Visitor access to exhibits. read more »

The Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography will exhibit Mr. Asfaw's remarkable visual essay, "Ethiopia: From The Heart", in its Gallery 85 location at 85 Avenue A at 3rd Street, Turners Falls, MA, from July 3 through September 21, 2008. Andarge Asfaw is a 1976 graduate of the Hallmark Institute of Photography, who now resides in Silver Spring, MD.
