(Updated 11pm Friday, 1/25/08) Well, it was a big week of camera announcements, with Olympus, Fuji, and Canon getting a lot press, but ultimately the big scene stealer was the K20D. It's been getting a lot of advance praise and generating interest across the web thanks to news of its 14.6MP CMOS sensor. Here's a fast and loose look at most of the bright spots, including links to the various sample photographs that have started popping up. Special thanks to 1001 Noisy Cameras and all the readers who helped submit the following links. PopPhoto : Jack Howard had the chance to play around with pre-production unit, and they took it around on the streets of New York City as well as Las Vegas. "Pentax has once again swung for the fences with the K20D, packing a ton of high-caliber features, heaps of megapixels, tons of customization, and a pro-caliber build into a camera that should manage to distinguish itself in a crowded pack of high-end enthusiast/entry-level pro SLRs. We've just begun our full lab test with an early production Pentax K20D and out initial findings show that the Pentax K20D is very class competitive (particularly at ISOs 100-1600) against other cameras in this category including the Canon EOS 40D, Sony Alpha 700, and the Nikon D300." Another highlight from PopPhoto? read more »
It is said that everything comes around full circle, creating a cycle. This is most certainly the case with reemergence of blank and white photography onto the scene. Why is black and white photography becoming en vogue again in a world that so emphasizes color? Despite the incredible popularity of digital photography in general, and creation of color images in particular, there will always be room for black and white.
24th April 2008: Breeze Systems announce the immediate availability of DSLR Remote Pro v1.7 for controlling Canon EOS cameras and PSRemote v1.6 for controlling Canon PowerShot cameras. DSLR Remote Pro v1.7 extends the photo booth mode and adds support for the Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, including remote live view display with auto-focus. Photo booth mode is added to PSRemote v1.6.
Chris Breeze writes
"Photo booth mode was introduced to DSLR Remote Pro last year in response to the increasing popularity of these booths at events. The new live view lets sitters see themselves pose in front of the camera and greatly enhances the photo booth experience. Guests have a great time taking their own photographs and take home a keepsake. Highly configurable prints can be unique to the event. Both formatted prints and the original images can now be saved for later reprinting, uploading to web galleries and copying to CD. Photo booth prints can be created in color or black and white (Note: some older DSLR cameras are restricted to color prints). read more »

After 6 weeks of use, I have a few thoughts on Canon’s iPF5100 inkjet printer. Going back in time, my first inkjet printer was the Epson 2200, and when I recognized that I needed a more economical way of printing I moved up to the Epson Stylus Pro 4000. After almost 2 solid years of use, I moved to the Epson Stylus Pro 3800. The 3800 was a mixed bag for my specific needs, so I decided to test the Canon waters with the iPF5100. Here are some impressions so far. I have a very specific set of needs for my printing. I do consulting work for Moab by Legion Paper, as I create all of their ICC profiles for them as well as handle some support requests, the testing of new papers and also the printing of large amounts of paper for tradeshows and reseller displays. read more »
